
Look for: A skirt that gradually flares out in an A development from the natural midsection to the ground, highlighting the narrowness of the midsection and floating away from the sides and thighs. (Sturdier fabrics, such as duchesse satin and taffeta, are effective especially, since they won't cling.) A spaghetti-strap bodice or a V neckline will showcase a far more slender upper body also.

Remember: A vintage A-line silhouette lends itself to formal wedding ceremonies, but it can be dressed down when made from a more everyday fabric, like eyelet ribbons or raw-silk shantung.
