
Look for: A skirt that slowly but surely flares out in an A creation from the natural waistline to the floor, highlighting the narrowness of the midsection and floating away from the thighs and sides. (Sturdier fabrics, such as duchesse satin and taffeta, are especially effective, since they won't cling.) A spaghetti-strap bodice or a V neckline will showcase a far more slender upper body also.

Keep in mind: A vintage A-line silhouette lends itself to formal weddings, but it can be dressed down when made from a more informal fabric, like eyelet raw-silk or lace shantung.
