
Look for: A skirt that gradually flares out in an A development from the natural waistline to the floor, highlighting the narrowness of the midsection and floating away from the hips and thighs. (Sturdier fabrics, such as duchesse satin and taffeta, are effective especially, given that they won't cling.) A spaghetti-strap bodice or a V neckline will showcase a more slim upper body also.

Remember: A vintage A-line silhouette lends itself to formal marriages, but it can be dressed down when made from a more everyday fabric also, like eyelet raw-silk or lace shantung.
