
Look for: A skirt that gradually flares out within an A creation from the natural waist to the ground, highlighting the narrowness of the midsection and floating away from the hips and thighs. (Sturdier fabrics, such as duchesse taffeta and satin, are especially effective, given that they won't cling.) A spaghetti-strap bodice or a V neckline will also showcase a far more slim upper body.

Keep in mind: A vintage A-line silhouette lends itself to formal weddings, but it can be dressed down when made from a more informal fabric also, like eyelet raw-silk or ribbons shantung.
