
Look for: A skirt that slowly but surely flares out in an A formation from the natural waistline to the ground, highlighting the narrowness of the midsection and floating from the thighs and sides. (Sturdier fabrics, such as duchesse satin and taffeta, are effective especially, since they won't cling.) A spaghetti-strap bodice or a V neckline will showcase a more slender upper body also.

Keep in mind: A classic A-line silhouette lends itself to formal wedding ceremonies, but it can be dressed down when made from a more casual fabric also, like eyelet raw-silk or lace shantung.
