Look for: A skirt that gradually flares out in an A formation from the natural midsection to the floor, highlighting the narrowness of the midsection and floating from the thighs and hips. (Sturdier fabrics, such as duchesse taffeta and satin, are effective especially, given that they won't cling.) A spaghetti-strap bodice or a V neckline will showcase a more slender upper body also.
Remember: A vintage A-line silhouette lends itself to formal wedding ceremonies, but it can be dressed down when made from a more casual fabric also, like eyelet ribbons or raw-silk shantung.
