
Look for: A skirt that steadily flares out in an A formation from the natural stomach to the floor, highlighting the narrowness of the midsection and floating away from the sides and thighs. (Sturdier fabrics, such as duchesse satin and taffeta, are effective especially, given that they won't cling.) A spaghetti-strap bodice or a V neckline will also showcase a more slender upper body.

Remember: A vintage A-line silhouette lends itself to formal wedding ceremonies, but it may also be dressed down when made from a more informal fabric, like eyelet raw-silk or ribbons shantung.
