
Look for: A skirt that steadily flares out within an A formation from the natural midsection to the floor, highlighting the narrowness of the midsection and floating from the hips and thighs. (Sturdier fabrics, such as duchesse satin and taffeta, are effective especially, since they won't cling.) A spaghetti-strap bodice or a V neckline will showcase a more slim upper body also.

Keep in mind: A vintage A-line silhouette lends itself to formal marriages, but it can be dressed down when made from a more everyday fabric also, like eyelet ribbons or raw-silk shantung.
