
Look for: A skirt that slowly but surely flares out within an A creation from the natural waistline to the ground, highlighting the narrowness of the midsection and floating from the sides and thighs. (Sturdier fabrics, such as duchesse satin and taffeta, are effective especially, since they won't cling.) A spaghetti-strap bodice or a V neckline will showcase a more slender upper body also.

Keep in mind: A classic A-line silhouette lends itself to formal weddings, but it can be dressed down when made from a more informal fabric, like eyelet ribbons or raw-silk shantung.
